Taken by the 2nd Ranger battalion commanded by Colonel Ruddler, the Pointe du Hoc was a strategic point of the German fortifications on the Norman coast.

La Pointe du Hoc

Halfway between Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, the Point du Hoc is a 30 meters cliff dominating the sea. The site houses the remains of the powerful battery installed by the Germans and the marks of the terrible fights that took place there.

The day before the D-Day, soldiers from the 2nd Ranger battalion climbed the cliff using ropes, ladders and grapples and engaged the enemy. Surrounded at the Pointe Du Hoc, soldiers had to face with the powerful German counter-attacks and some were taken, prisoner. They were eventually released on June 8th after the loss of 80 of their comrades.
